So we'll just keep monitoring it and kind of work through the spring." It kinda puts us in a tough spot because you don't want to be left short. So we want to make sure that we obviously get to 85, but you have to kind of forecast that out.
"I'd say now more than ever because just everything that can go on with the transfer portal. "With everything going on, it's kind of a floating number again, as it is year in and year out," head coach Ryan Day said late last month when asked about the scholarship situation. At this point, Ohio State is six players over the 85-man rule set by the NCAA. These include wide receiver Kamryn Babb, defensive tackle Jerron Cage, offensive lineman Matthew Jones, safety Tanner McCalister, linebacker Teradja Mitchell, tight end Mitch Rossi and kicker Noah Ruggles as the scholarship players. Ohio State has 10 "graduates" on the roster, double the amount the team had a year ago. Players were granted another year by the NCAA due to the altered COVID-19 season of 2020. These are players who have completed their degree and their normal four years of eligibility but have returned for an additional season with the Scarlet and Gray.
#OHIO STATE FOOTBALL ROSTER UPDATE#
The most notable part of the roster update is the number of "graduate" players that are listed. With the roster update, we now know what the Buckeyes will look like - assuming no more unexpected departures or transfer portal entries - heading into 2022 spring practice. This meant that the departed seniors and those who declared early for the 2022 NFL Draft have been removed, along with defensive lineman Cormontae Hamilton, who is no longer with the program. On Thursday, Ohio State updated the team's roster on to reflect the group as it stands currently. The Scarlet and Gray players are now fully into winter workouts before spring practice begins sometime in early March. With the 2021 Ohio State football season now more than a month in the rearview mirror, the Buckeyes' attention is now squarely on the offseason and preparing for 2022.
